What is ads txt-file?

This is an authorized digital advertising industry initiative to clean up digital advertising and to bring transparency to advertising.

This initiative came about as a result of a number of scandals around the misrepresentation of ads inventory that result in big money being spent on bad inventory. The solution, backed by the IAB and most of the big players in the ads space is deceptively simple, for once cheap and easy for publishers of all sizes to implement.

How does ads txt-file work?

The authorized digital seller is simply a txt-file that sits on your behalf. This idea is for buyers to be able to collect this data and be sure that if they’re paying for ads on rollingstone.com then that is where those ads will appear. See example on rollingstone.com

This is also a file that enables publishers to add to their site to certify their ownership of the site and list the account or accounts that are authorized to sell their inventory, doing so, a format that can be easily crawled and indexed.

What do publishers gain from implementing ads txt-file?

Ads txt-file is beneficial to both advertisers and publishers; advertisers looking for exposure on your site won’t be tricked into buying misrepresented inventories and you as well will retain control over pricing. 

As for the standard gains, more widespread adoption, buyers are more likely to require ads txt-file for all buys making it more relevant to less well-known publishers too.

Publishers are encouraged to adopt the ads txt-file because the cost of ads txt-file is incredibly low and just in five minutes, work is enough to get most sites compliant. Also, according to Builtwith, over 30% of the top 10,000 websites currently use the ads txt-file with adoption being led by Russia, Uk, and U.S.A.

The low cost and ease of adoption mean that this could suit independent publishers who aren’t concerned about the transparency issue and have the flexibility to rule out change more easily.

How to fix the ads txt-file issues?

This section gives a guideline on how you can fix the ads txt-file showing on your Google Adsense dashboard.

Note: with the pictures on each step, it will give you a pictorial guide on how to fix the ads txt-file.

Step 1:  On your Google AdSense dashboard, you will get a notification like a picture below


Click on the “fix now” button.
In your Google AdSense dashboard(home) you will see a message “earnings at risk: you need to fix some ads txt-file issues........”. 

On that same line, you will see two blue links(instructions) “fix now” and “learn more”. Click on the “fix now” button. And move to the next step, which is!

Step 2: Click the down arrow “v” to create an ads txt-file.


After you’ve followed the first step correctly, click on the down arrow “v” (in some cases that opens automatically, but when that don’t happen, you click on down arrow “v”)


In the box, click on the download button to download your site’s ads txt-file, open the downloaded file folder, copy the downloaded file and work with me to the next step (step 3).

Step 3: 


Log in to your blogger account or blogger dashboard (I hope you still know how to log in to your blogger dashboard right? But if you don’t kindly read this “how to log in to your blogger dashboard”).

Step 4: 


Select the blog you want the ads txt-file to feature in

Step 5: 


Click on settings in your blogger dashboard
When you have successfully logged in to your blogger dashboard, scroll down to “settings”. Under settings, search for “search preferences”.

Step 6: 


Scroll down to “Monetization” in your “search preferences”.
Monetization is found when you click the “search preferences”, click the “edit button” under edit, click on the yes button and paste your copied ads txt-file (file copied in your step 2). 

When that is done, click on the “” save changes” button. We are done.
Do note that this will take up to a week or more for this to take effect on Google.
